Pumpkin seeds sprouted in 6 days

From hard tan seed to two fat green leaves — fast.

Field notes

On June 8 we poked pumpkin seeds an inch deep into a soft mound of compost. Six days later they punched up through the dirt with two big oval leaves still wearing the seed shell as a hat.

Those first two leaves are called 'cotyledons' — they're not real leaves. They were already packed inside the seed and they feed the plant until the real leaves grow.

The learning

What's actually happening

What a seed is, exactly

A seed is a tiny plant that pressed pause. It's got a baby root, a baby stem, two baby leaves (the cotyledons), and a packed lunch of starch — all wrapped in a hard coat. When the seed gets warm water, it un-pauses.

Why pumpkins need a LOT of room

One pumpkin vine can stretch 20 feet long and make leaves the size of dinner plates. Each plant typically produces 2–5 pumpkins. Plant them too close and they'll fight for sunlight.

Words to know

Cotyledon
The first leaf (or pair of leaves) that comes out of a seed. Pre-packed lunch.
Germinate
When a seed wakes up and starts growing.
Vine
A plant with a long, climbing or crawling stem.
